I attended the Dr Phil event last week in Sydney. Why? OK, so sure, I was offered a ticket to go with a good friend, but the real reason I went was to see the man in action, to see for myself if he was 'all that' compared with his tell-it-like-it-is TV show success.
There wasn't a lot that he said that I didn't already know about life and the inner workings of our human thinking, but this gem came at the very end, and made the evening 100% worthwhile.
Turns out, Dr Phil and I have something in common - we love finding out what makes people tick. For me, it's the drive behind the content I currently present to parents on motherhood and identity.
Dr Phil has conducted a lot of research into what makes people successful. He's interested in that 1% defining difference that has one person play cricket for Australia, and the next person remain waiting in A Reserves. Here's what he found.
Common Traits among the Most Successful People – according to Dr Phil
1. They name it to claim it - they know what they want
2. They have a strategy / a plan - for how they're going to achieve it
3. They believe the universe rewards action - there's an energy or force that pushes people forward when they are taking action towards their goals
4. They don’t have a comfort zone - they are willing to take a risk
5. They possess an unbelievably strong connection with reality - there is no BS about these people, if they have a problem or challenge they're on to it
6. They have a nucleus of people around them that shares their goal - they surround themselves with people who want them to succeed and who lift them up
7. They are passionate about what they do
If it's your goal to be successful in an arena of your choosing - be it motherhood, career, life - how do you 'score' on Dr Phil's checklist?
